The language recalls the mythic notion of new beginnings and celebrates the idealism of America, not as an imperial power, a conqueror of native lands or an oppressor of minorities, but as a place capable of change – make it new, he cries. For these critics there was something worth saving, something that was not mere rhetoric. The counter-culture sought both the renewal of ‘wonder’ and the politics of opposition, both vision and action; and in this regard it was very much in an American tradition.
